Instant messaging (IM)
is a form of real-time communication between two or more people based on typed text. The text is conveyed via devices connected over a network such as the Internet.
Tencent QQ
Tencent QQ, generally referred to as QQ, is the most popular free instant messaging computer program in Mainland China, and the world’s third most popular IM service [1]. The program is maintained by Tencent Holdings Limited (HKEX: 0700), owned in part by Naspers.[2] Since its entrance into Chinese households QQ quickly emerged as a modern cultural phenomenon, now being portrayed in popular culture. Aside from the chat program, QQ has also developed many subfeatures including games, pets, ringtone downloads, etc.
Naming
The original name of QQ was OICQ. The name was based on an already existing IMS (Internet Message Service), "ICQ".
ICQ was one of the first IMS programs. The acronym "ICQ" came from the fact that the letters sound like "I seek you".
"OICQ" stood for "Oriental ICQ"[citation needed] but because of possible trademark infringement was changed to "QQ".
History
Tencent was founded in Shenzhen, China in 11 November, 1998. Tencent's instant messaging service platform, "QQ" was formally launched in February 1999. After years of strong business growth, on July 16, 2004, Tencent Holdings Limited (SEHK 700) went public.
Development
QQ was initially developed by Tencent Inc. in February 1999. It was first released as a "Network Paging" real time communications service. Then other features were successively added such as chatrooms, games, personal avatars (similar to "Meebo" in MSN), internet storage, and internet dating services. Most of these features were free. Its variety of features and easy-to-use interface made it very popular, especially among teenage users. In a few short years it was the most popular real time communications service in China.
The current version of QQ is QQ2009 Beta.[3] Tencent periodically releases special versions of QQ to coincide with events such as the Olympics or Chinese New Year.
The official client runs on Microsoft Windows and a beta public version was launched for Apple Mac version OSX 10.4.9 or newer [4]. The web version, which makes use of Ajax, is currently in Beta[5]. On July 31st, 2008 Tencent released an official client for Linux. [6]
Messenger AOL Instant (AIM)
MessengerAOL Instant (AIM) is an instant messaging and presence computer program which uses the proprietary OSCAR instant messaging protocol and the TOC protocol to allow registered users to communicate in real time. It was released by AOL in May 1997. Stand-alone official AIM client software includes advertisements and is available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Mac OS X, and Linux. The software, maintained by AOL, LLC, has a large share of the instant messaging market, especially in the United States (with 52% of the total reported as of 2006).[1]
History
In 1994, AOL Employee Barry Appelman hired programmer Stephen D. William and for five months they worked together building a prototype system that allowed AOL subscribers to have an early form of an instant messenger.[2]
In 1995, AIM was launched internally to AOL employees. It was initially dubbed "the stalker feature" since many employees were uncomfortable having their co-workers know when they were online. AOL decided to make AIM available to its subscribers in May 1997.[2]
Since version 2.0, AIM has included person-to-person instant messaging, chatroom messaging, and the ability to share files Peer-to-peer with one's buddies. Version 4.3 introduced the storing of one's contact list on AOL's servers and allowed for a maximum of 200 buddies to be stored. In addition, somewhere in the 4.x versions, the AIM client for Microsoft Windows added the ability to play games against one another using the Wild Tangent engine. The first version released with WildTangent did not warn the user that it was going to be installed. Newer versions do, due to the fact that many spyware scanners flag the WildTangent software as spyware.[3]
PSYC
PSYC (Protocol for SYnchronous Conferencing) is a flexible text-based protocol for delivery of data to a large number of recipients or people. It is used for text chat, instant messaging, presence display, newscasting and social networking.
History
PSYC theory and protocol was first published in 1995 by Carlo von Loesch.[1][2] It was heavily influenced by IRC and the shortcomings in network clusters, such as netsplits and high traffic consumption between servers. Since 1997 the first software implementations were in productive use at T-Online, Gruner + Jahr and other companies in Germany. Since 2003 PSYC is being employed at the MTV Europe Music Awards for the hosted backstage video chat show.[3]
Network structure
The PSYC network resembles more the Web rather than IRC, which it once was inspired by. Each administrator of a machine on the Internet can install a PSYC server which has equal rights in the worldwide network, there are no hierarchies or boundaries. The administrator then has the right to decide which rooms or people to host, without interfering with other PSYC servers. Should an administrator behave incorrectly towards his users, these will simply move on to a different server. Thus, administrators must behave to remain a popular host for their friends.
